Helsinki Draws 409,000 International Cruise Visitors This Year
There were 240 cruise ship visits in Helsinki during summer 2016. Germany had the biggest number of cruise visitors.
Helsinki cruise ship visitors
The international cruise tourism has been experiencing an increasing growth all over the world, with the Helsinki summer cruise season very busy too. This year, there were 409,000 cruise ship passengers that came to Helsinki. However, this is 28,000 lesser compared to 2015. The slight decrease is due to the decline in numbers of these cruise ship visits and to cancellations because of bad weather.
According to Jenny Taipale, the Project Manager for Visit Helsinki’s Cruise Marketing, the cruise ship visitors spend 6 – 10 hrs on average in the city, and they join tours which were booked in advance. The sightseeing tours are extremely favored. However, the visitors are already looking for different experiences and finding out about local culture. The latest public saunas attracted a lot of cruise visitors this year.
Helsinki as a turnaround port
This summer, Helsinki became a turnaround port for the Pullmantur, a Spanish cruise operator. Three of their cruise ships changed their passengers in the city.
Taipale said that the turnaround process was a success according to the cruise operator.
Asian visitors are also getting interested in cruises. Around 340,000 Asians did cruises outside Asia during 2015. Seventy-four percent of these were in Europe. The number of Chinese cruise visitors increased by 24% last year.
A demand for a current form of marketing
This summer, Visit Helsinki, with help from Cruise Baltic network, conducted the Helsinki Talk Show in Princess cruise ships. The special guests entertained passengers through talks about Helsinki in various perspectives.
Taipale mentioned that it was a huge success, and they were asked to continue by next year.
Serving cruise ship visitors
The Helsinki Helpers welcomed cruise ship visitors at every terminal. They gave out the ‘Day in Helsinki’ map illustrations, which comes in 7 languages, and other helpful brochures. The mobile tourist information advisers also served the cruise ship visitors in the city center.
The cruise season this year started last May 9 and ended last October 12.
